How Do You Pack a Diaper Bag For 2 Kids?

Packing a diaper bag for two kids isn’t as difficult as you might think. Still, doing so will require organization and planning.

How Do You Pack a Diaper Bag For a Toddler and a Newborn?

When packing a diaper bag for two kids, you’ll need to first remember their ages. If one of your children is older and the other much younger, you will need to anticipate the needs of both. This means you’ll need radically different things in your diaper bag. It also means you’ll need a very big diaper bag!

It is for these reasons that we’ve selected the previously mentioned diaper bags. Not only are they large, but they also contain many features that will make your life easier when out with two kids.

The following are a few things you may need for a toddler and newborn diaper bag. Bear in mind that this list is not exhaustive. It also may include things you may not need. What each parent will need in their diaper bag will vary. This is simply a checklist of items that you may want to think about. Feel free to adjust it according to what your needs are!

Here are our top 5 must-haves for your toddler and newborn diaper bag:

  1. Bottles and Sippy Cups: Packing bottles for your newborn and a sippy cup for your toddler are essential. When you are out and about, at least one of them is bound to get thirsty. Get a diaper bag with pockets designed specifically for bottles. These pockets often have insulation to keep your bottle at the perfect temperature. You’ll also want to look for pockets that have elastic or gussets around the tops. These pockets can help keep a sippy cup in place so they aren’t toppling over. A sippy cup that isn’t securely anchored in your diaper bag is likely to get everything wet!
  2. Diapers (and Maybe Underwear): If both your newborn and toddler are in diapers, make sure you grab several diapers of each size! This is very important as you won’t want to be stranded without a diaper for either child. If your toddler is potty-trained, pack plenty of underwear (or pull-ups) just in case. Along with this, be sure to get a cushioned changing pad. Changing pads and changing pad covers can make diaper changes more comfortable for your child. Many diaper bags mentioned in this article come with complementary changing pads!
  3. Wipes: It is essential that you bring wipes along in your diaper bag. For ease of use, you can stick your wipes in exterior pockets so you can grab them when you need to. We recommend buying wipes that have very few additives in them so that they can be used for a variety of purposes. Water wipes, for example, can be used on faces, hands, and bottoms, and are even approved for babies with eczema.
  4. Snacks: Every mom (and dad) knows the importance of having snacks on hand when a toddler is around. Pick from delicious finger foods, and don’t be afraid to bring along bite-sized veggies (like cut up zucchini) for the ride.
  5. Second Change of Clothing: If your baby or toddler needs extra clothes for any reason, you want to know you’ve got some stashed. An extra change (or two) of clothes is non-negotiable…you must have them!
  6. First Aid Kit: This might sound like a no-brainer, but it may be something that is easy to forget. First aid kits are especially useful when your toddler is on the go, as you never know what they may topple over next. Keep Band-Aids, ointment, and gauze ready in case something happens. It also doesn’t hurt to keep a thermometer on hand–you just might need it!
  7. Nursing Cover: If you are breastfeeding your baby you’ll certainly want a nursing cover on hand. These are also useful for covering up your baby in a sunny car or a stroller for nap times. Get a nursing cover that is advertised as doing all of the above, and you’re good to go!
  8. Pacifier: A pacifier is good to have when your newborn gets fussy. Some toddlers may also still be taking a pacifier, too. Pacifiers act as soothers and depending on where you are during the day, it may be just what the children need to relax. Just be sure to place them in a travel case or bag to prevent them from getting dirty.

Other Items to consider having on hand include:

  • Burp Cloths
  • Small Toys (WaterWow, Mini MagnaDoodle, etc.)
  • Breast Pump (if needed)
  • Your Keys, Phone, and Wallet
  • Water (For You!)
  • Hand Sanitizer
  • Disinfectant Wipes
  • Vaccination Cards (if Applicable)

Best Diaper Bag for 2 Kids – FAQs

What should a diaper bag have?

A diaper bag should have plenty of space, many insulated and non-insulated pockets, and comfortable shoulder straps. It should be made of sturdy material and should be something that you find relatively attractive. Also, be sure to consider other people that may be carrying a diaper bag. Try to choose something in a neutral color if dad will carry the bag, too.

At what age do you stop carrying a diaper bag?

That depends. Some say that a diaper bag is no longer necessary once your child is out of diapers. However, we say that it is up to the parents. Diaper bags contain so much more than just diapers and can be really useful to carry items, even for older kids. Therefore, you should carry a diaper bag as long as it still serves a purpose for you!
